Scuba Diving in
North Goa (Panjim).
A short boat dive off the capital’s coast — shallower and more sheltered than Grand Island, which makes it a solid choice for a first breath underwater without the 45-minute open-sea crossing.
Why Panjim
Panjim is central. If you’re staying in North Goa (Baga, Calangute, Candolim, Anjuna), you can be at the jetty in under an hour. The dive site sits in sheltered water — the boat ride is short, the swell is low, and the depth stays first-timer-friendly.
It doesn’t have Grand Island’s marine density, but for a first dive — or if the sea is too rough for the southern crossing — Panjim delivers a genuine scuba experience without the commute.
10–15 metres
Shallow enough that instructors keep total oversight, deep enough that you’ll see a real reef, not just sand.
~20 minute ride
Sheltered water inside the coastline — light swell, easy on anyone prone to seasickness.
Reef fish & small critters
Damselfish, wrasse, small groupers, and if you’re lucky, an octopus in the rocks.
5–10 metres typical
Best on calm winter days — the tide and river outflow do vary it.

When to pick Panjim over Grand Island
Pick Panjim if it’s your first dive, if you get seasick easily, if you’re short on time (a half-day trip vs. a full day for Grand Island), or if the sea is too rough for the southern crossing on the day. Pick Grand Island if you want the deepest, cleanest reef Goa has to offer.
